The route of the Batavierenrace goes over more than 180 kilometers and contains 25 stages, of which 17 are men's and 8 are women's stages. There are also three shifts, a night- (stage 1-9), morning- (stage 10-17) and dayshift (stage 18-25).
Every shift starts with a official (re)start, in Nijmegen at 00:00 AM at the University Sports Centre of the Radboud University, Dinxperlo at 06.30 AM and Barchem at 11.00 AM.
The final stage is a combined men's and women's stage, which starts at the Old Market in Enschede, and finishes at the cinder track on the campus of the University of Twente.
The three restarts take place so the organization of the Batavierenrace can control the distance between the first and last runner.

The Competition Secretariat (called WS in Dutch) has formulated Contest Rules which have to be followed during the race, to get a final result. When these rules are violated, penalty's can be assigned to that specific runner. The University Competition has other contest rules than the regular competitors.
